↟ Break Away Tale NR 159 // @ryankodakbrown

Hi! My name is Ryan Brown but my friends on trail call me Kodak. For the last six years, I’ve been traveling around North America on bike and on foot. I’ve cycled from Canada to El Salvador. I’ve hiked the Appalachian Trail. This year, I cycled a dirt road route from Mexico to Canada (Arizona to Montana) to name some of the bigger trips. I’ve traveled over 20,000 miles by human power. ⠀

The question of why, or how I got started, is a lot harder to answer as it speaks to motivation. Why do we do anything?! The short answer is that, in 2012, I experienced my first bike tour (300miles) and was instantly hooked. I returned to Pittsburgh and quit my job. I cycled to Maine. Then, back in Pittsburgh, I made more changes. I sold practically everything I owned and cut all my bills but my cell phone (no car, moved into a “squat,” etc). I saved as much as I could and adventured till the money ran out. I’d work again and repeat the process.⠀

I won’t go into all the details of the “long answer” but I will say this: prior to travel, my life was a wreck. I suffered from severe anxiety and depression and I felt like a failure (anxiety forced me to drop out of college for one). Travel changed everything, though, in the best ways possible. ⠀

If your thinking about stepping outside your comfort zone, I encourage you to do it! The hardest part is just getting started, it’s waking out your door. Once you do, rest will sort itself out.⠀
