↟ Break Away Tale NR 123 // @homesteading101⠀
Neither of us really had any idea what we were in for when we embarked on this journey and we hold no pretenses that we know what we’re doing!!! Keith had a little background in natural build my through a 6 month apprenticeship he participated in a couple of years ago, but plumbing, solar, moisture control, water systems etc were all a learning lesson. Everything we do is a little Ramshackle, but with lots of love and attention to detail. He now works with an eco-minded contracting cooperative and is learning a lot about how things are formally done.⠀
As for me, my background is in the healing arts although I was inspired to embark on this journey when we took our Permaculture Design Course. I’ve worked as a death doula and am currently a hospice volunteer while in school to become a hospice nurse. I help people die well, and I feel like I’ve found my calling in this work.⠀
Part of what we hope to create is a land sanctuary that inspires and nurtures us. We don’t intend to make a living from the land, just steward it and explore the possibilities of living well off-grid.⠀
We still have a lot to learn and improve, but coming home to the cabin at the end of the day is a wonderful feeling. It’s earthen walls hold us warm and cozy, and it breaths more than traditional construction so there is a sense of being one with the outside world but while having our basic creature comforts.
