↟ Break Away Tale NR 198 // @fietsenvoorkinderfietsen

We are Martijn and Mariëlle! We bike to see the world and raise attention and funds for children in poverty in our hometown. We are on our way from (cycling city) Groningen in the Netherlands to the Chinese partnercities Xi’an and Tianjin. In our hometown we ask people people to donate their second hand childrenbike(s). The bikes get fixed in a social workplace and handed out to kids in need for a bike. In the moment of writing this, we have collected more than 300 bikes.⠀

Perhaps our “breakaway-tale” is best described by the text on the postcards that we send to our loveones last christmas. We wrote: “Last year was problably the most special of all 28 (we are both 28 years old). The hardest was the choice to leave. The happiest were the moments on the bike; especially after a long, steap climb. The arduous were the periods of disease. The greatest lesson is the experience that people from different countries and cultures are simultaneously different and also the same. The most pleasing was a real bed and a warm shower after days of wild camping. The most challenging is to do everything together under all circumstances. The most beautiful is the nature.”⠀

So far we have crossed 21 countries. At the moment we are in Thailand; tomorrow we cross the border to Myanmar. We continue by going back to Thailand, to Laos, maybe Vietnam and China. After reaching Tianjin we would like to visit South-Korea and Japan, go back with Trans-Siberian railway and cycle home from St. Petersburg. But that are just plans, or better said: wishes. Everything can always change. We’ll see what happens. ⠀

Keep smiling and riding! M&M.⠀
